Safe

As a puppy on the streets of Chanakyapuri

She learned to be her own remedy

She followed the Vet, laid down at her door

Refusing to leave, asking to be just one more

A skinny little street dog all white and tan

Trusted the woman more than the man

One day they beckoned her into their sanctuary

In her hunger she forgot to be wary

________

Tested, rested, and fed

She slept for the first time in a bed

But they had a mission, she was meant for more

They crated her up for Delhi Airport

She ended up at an O’Hare facility

And she became my heart’s remedy.

___________

They had missed the tiny monsters in her heart

It gave her such a rough start

That I promised her I would never leave her again

Alone with such pain

She remembered the route to the vet

Four years and on to five she couldn’t forget

The day we left town, we passed that way

She still knew the exit off the highway

But we kept going and she understood

She was free of that vet for good

__________

She had hated car rides until that moment

They had promised her only possible torment

But once we drove past

She felt safe at last

If only I had known that simple cure

For all the fear she had had to endure.
