I spent my childhood in a book. Jules Verne really started it all with his adventures under the sea but Poe sealed the deal. I had this collection of stories in little red books printed in the early 1900s that I could read over and over again. The words of people long past kept me company and inspired me to see monsters, treasure, and mysteries in the most mundane locations.
Like Metzengerstein I could watch giant insects make their way near the hills, all I had to do was squint. When I write, while I can’t seem to bring things to life out of the firmament, I get to feel words and letters flow as they wind their way to making sense. I sit with words and feel the flow of the river that connects me to all the authors I’ve ever read. That’s what I enjoy most.
