Do Not Disturb

Life lesson 3,333.

It’s okay to step back. It’s alright to rest. The world’s problems will not be out of stock tomorrow. No matter what the marketing department might tell us, we are not in short supply of everything. We live in a world where an instant response is expected. That’s not exactly what we ordered. If I remember correctly, we asked that when we called a government agency, or when we called a business, that a person would answer so we could get information that we needed.

What we got instead, was a reversal. We got a world where we are the ones that should be available. Yeah that was an inherent part of the original idea but we didn’t think it through apparently. At work, we can do that. It seems reasonable because that’s kind of the point of most work. But, it’s invaded every aspect of life. We are even expected to shop now outside of regular store hours because well there’s only 24 hours left for the sale prices and after that they’ll be gone!

I’ve heard that it’s all due to fear of missing out (FOMO). I think it’s a bit more than that. I don’t fear missing out on a sale. I also don’t fear missing out on the latest episode of a show. But, I do find that since there’s no off button on the outside world, I end too many days feeling that I could have done more somehow. The entire world feels like house work. The list of things to be done never grows smaller and it never feels like anything is getting accomplished because the things we need to do are not isolated projects, they’re day to day activities. Housework it is, which means I get to decide when it’s good enough for the day. I can live with less than perfection and I’m really good at it.

On that note, I’m taking a break for this weekend. I’m going to spend some time catching up on my reading. Yep that’s my excuse because I am looking forward to relaxing with some glorious fluff and nonsense and a cup, or two, of tea. I look forward to reading what y’all write and I’ll write some more on Monday.

I take the words of Archbishop Harold Holmes as a little warning
