Travel Slow

Daily writing prompt
What countries do you want to visit?

I don’t like to visit countries. It’s such a sad affair. Popping in for a day, maybe 2, is no way to get to know a place. I traveled that way once. It was a bus trip to Amsterdam and the seashore nearby. The bus was really the main character of the trip. Now 30 years later, it’s what I remember most. It will forever amaze me that people even considered using a bathroom on a moving bus, let alone made the actual attempt. I am grateful that my seat was not near that part of the bus.

If I do get to travel again, I’d rather live somewhere for a while. To get to know a place, its pace of life, its habits, its food and festivals, is much more satisfying. The language of a place has purpose and character. How can you understand the people in Les Vosges if you don’t at least understand both French and German, let alone a small part of the history? There’s so many treasures to be found but you need to spend the time in order to find them. Italy though, or the UK, I haven’t been to either, yet.
