“If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong.” – Abraham Lincoln
“You can’t separate peace from freedom, because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.” – Malcolm X
Nottoway Plantation Burning has had me thinking about slavery today. There’s nothing abundant or generous about owning, or thinking you can own, another human being. We don’t have the right to take another person’s abundance and use it as our own, or to profit from it without the consent of the one whose abundance is in question. That is more like vampirism than not. And to not return value for value is greed and theft. If that does not qualify as evil, I believe that nothing will rise to that label.
Nottoway Plantation, and its Planter class builder, are an example of how slavery and racism have been a part of this country before its actual founding. Long before there was a Nottoway County in Virginia, the colonists from England brought their bigotry with them, packed in their bags and tucked into their books on Parliamentary procedure, whether Whig or Tory, Catholic or Protestant.
